City drops off new automated trash bins for Sept. 30 collection transition

Secret Woods residents came home to new recycling and trash bins on Monday, August 12, as the city prepares to transition the neighborhood to a new automated collection program starting Monday, September 30, 2013.This is a city program. It has not been instituted by the Secret Woods board.  What follows is a question and answer section as provided by the City of Jacksonville and Waste Pro. WHAT KIND OF CARTS WILL I RECEIVE? Each resident will receive two (2) 96-gallon carts. The cart forgarbage will have a GREEN lid and the cart for recyclables will have a YELLOW lid.

HOW OFTEN WILL MY GARBAGE, YARD WASTE & RECYCLING BE COLLECTED? Garbage and yard waste will continue to be collected once a week and your service days will not change. Recycling will be collected once every other week. Your collection dayswill be outlined on the magnetic calendar delivered with your new carts.

CAN I MARK THE CART WITH MY ADDRESS AND/OR NAME? No, external markings are not allowed. For identification purposes, please make a note of the serial number on the carts.

WHEN SHOULD I PUT MY GARBAGE OUT? Ordinance – No. Section 382.415 “It is the responsibility of all property owners, residents, occupants and tenants to separate yard waste, recycling, and garbage (including rubbish).Yard waste, garbage (including rubbish) and recyclables shall be placed separately at curbside no sooner than 5:00 PM ofthe day before scheduled collection and any garbage/recyclablesreceptacles shall be removed by 6:00 AM of the dayfollowing collections.”

HOW SHOULD MY RECYCLABLE MATERIALS BE PLACED IN THE NEW CART? Your recycle materials should be placed in a non-sorted manner inside the cart with the YELLOW lid. A full list of acceptable materials will be delivered with your new cart.

HOW CAN I GET ADDITIONAL CARTS? Please contact the City of Jacksonville at (904) 630-City (2489) or at www.coj.net.

CAN I USE THE NEW CART BEFORE THE AUTOMATED COLLECTION BEGINS? You can start using the garbage cart as soon as you receive it, BUT the automated equipment used to empty therecycle carts is specifically designed to be used with thesecarts; please DO NOT use the recycle cart until Monday,September 30, 2013.

SHOULD I STILL BAG MY GARBAGE? Yes, it is recommended that garbage is bagged as you normally have done in the past. Bagging helps keep your cart clean andfree of odor; it also reduces the chance of wind blown litter.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO AUTOMATED COLLECTION CARTS? They provide a standardized clean look to the area. In addition,it reduces the chance of pests/rodents getting into your garbage.

HOW CAN I GET A SMALLER CART? The City of Jacksonville has directed Waste Pro to provide theresidents with two (2) 96-gallon carts; residents requesting smaller carts should contact the City at (904) 630-CITY(2489) 60 days after receiving your original cart.

MY CART IS DIRTY. CAN I GET A REPLACEMENT? The housekeeping of the cart is the responsibility of the homeowner. If you bag all your garbage, maintenance is minor. An occasional washing with water and ammonia or disinfectant cleaner will keep your cart from smelling.

HOW DO I DISPOSE OF MY OLD GARBAGE CAN? It is suggested that you use the old garbage can for your yardwaste and leaves. If you want to dispose of your garbage can,please place it in the recycle cart. If it is not made of recyclable materials, place it in the garbage cart.

ONE OF THE WHEELS HAS COME OFF MY CART. WHAT SHOULD I DO? The wheel has a pin which should snap onto the axle. It is possible that it was not pushed in properly at the time of delivery. To reattach the wheel, simply push the wheel backon until you feel it click in place. If you continue to have a problem, please call (904) 630-CITY (2489) and Waste Pro will repair or replace the cart.

CAN I PUT LEAVES, GRASS, OR OTHER YARD WASTE IN THIS NEW GARBAGE CART? No, yard waste will continue being collected using the current collection method. Yard waste will be collected once each week.IS THIS CART MINE TO KEEP?No, the carts do not belong to the homeowners. Should you move, even within the City limits, the carts should remain at the residence.

HOW MANY BAGS WILL EACH CART HOLD? A 96-gallon cart holds approximately seven (7) average filled 13-gallon garbage bags.

CAN WE PUT MORE BAGS OUT NEXT TO OUR CARTS? Ordinance – No. Section 382.416 requires that all bagged garbage, except for small bulky items that don’t fit in the cart, are placed inside the provided garbage cart for collection. The lid must be closed.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN DURING THE HOLIDAYS WHEN I HAVE EXCESS GARBAGE? Please remember that most holiday garbage is recyclable (i.e. wrapping paper, boxes, and packaging materials). Use the garbage cart for your perishables, recycle as much as possible and you may choose to hold non-perishables garbage until the following week.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO HAVE MY TIRES AND APPLIANCES COLLECTED? Please call (904) 630-CITY (2489) to schedule a pickup of these items. You will be informed by the staff member on the date of the scheduled collection. Please do not place your discarded material at the curb before 5:00 PM the day prior to scheduled collection.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO HAVE MY BULK (ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT FIT INTO MY CART I.E. FURNITURE, COUCH, ETC.) COLLECTED? Please contact (904) 630-CITY (2489) for up-to-date information/instructions on how to get your small bulky items collected.
