FISH KILL HITS SECRET WOODS
At least ten dead fish have been spotted
and/or retrieved
from the pond in the 7000 block of Secret Woods Drive.
Secret Woods Board President Wayne Williams said the fish kill
is the apparent result of pool repair materials being allowed to
drain down the street into the pond. The pool is currently
undergoing repairs (see the
January minutes for more
details). At least three different varieties of dead fish
have been retrieved, including catfish and carp.
The pond has
served as a home to a variety of life including minnows, ducks,
other birds, turtles and frogs.
The dead carp in this photo was retreived from
the Secret Woods Drive pond on Saturday, Jan. 13,
2007. It was about four feet long and is
believed to be more than seven years old. |
Williams said the board has already contacted the
neighborhood's lake doctors to assess the damage and treat
the pond to once again support life. The pond will likely be restocked. The pool contractor is
also being informed of the fish kill. It was unclear as
this was written whether any fines or liability might result
from the fish kill.
The kill serves as an important reminder to
residents that anything discarded in a driveway or street is
likely to eventually make its way into one of the neighborhood's
ponds as part of rain runoff and perhaps even into Pottsburg
Creek.
Cigarette butts, bottles and other careless
littering have been constant sources of pollution. It is
also important to keep our ponds and Pottsburg Creek in mind
when using fertilizers. Residents should also be sure to promptly clean
driveway spills involving oil, anti-freeze or
other toxins that could damage the neighborhood's
ecosystem.
