Board meeting minutes - October 11, 2004

The Secret Woods October 11, 2004 board meeting was called to order by Board President Sallie Wnuk at 6:30 p.m. at the home of the Bortzfields.

The following board members attended: Bill Bortzfield, Tom Bozak, Wayne Williams, Valerie Redmond, Horst Pophal, and Sallie Wnuk. Resident Byron DeLong also attended.

Sallie opened the meeting by asking Bill to read the minutes from the September 13 board meeting. The minutes were approved as read.

Sallie then asked Tom for the treasurer's report. As of October 11, 2004 the neighborhood had a balance of $23,958.18.

Tom also noted for the record that one more yes vote has been received on the shed amendment.

Sallie then updated the board on efforts to collect money to repair the damage to the back entrance sign.  The neighborhood's insurance company will only pay out $500 on the claim.

Sallie has also spoken with Strongarm Tree, which was the company that an eyewitness identified as responsible for backing into the sign.

The owner claimed it was not his company and that he was in Orlando the day the sign was hit.  Strongarm claims it sold its old truck to another person who still has the signage on it.  The owner told Sallie he believed that the new owner of the truck is responsible for the damage.

Sallie doesn't said she doesn't think the neighborhood will be able to get Strongarm Tree to admit guilt, although she said she would continue her efforts to get some sort of retribution.

Wayne said he got a bid from Doug's Masonry to rebuild the brick work surrounding the sign.  Doug's Masonry said the bricks cost about $500 and labor would run about $1,000 for a total of $1,500.  That estimate does not include the cost of having a new sign made.

The old sign is currently in the Secret Woods room at the pool.  It will be inspected to see if it should be salvaged.  No action was taken on the sign repair since the board felt there wasn't enough information to move forward with bidding out the job yet.

Attention then turned to replacing Board Treasurer Tom Bozak.  Valerie agreed to take on the treasurer's position on an interim basis.

Valerie also updated the board on the upcoming October 23 Halloween Parade.  Final preparations are underway.  A committee meeting is being held Thursday night to finalize preparations.

Sallie then asked the board if it should have a luminaries night this Christmas season.  The general thought was yes.  Bill agreed to ask our local Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop if they would be interested taking part in assembling and distributing the luminaries as a public service project.

Before taking on the work the board agreed to put out a neighborhood poll to see if there was enough interest to justify having a luminaries night.

Bill then proposed that the board approve an online Secret Woods shop where residents could purchase merchandise such as coffee mugs, shirts and other items with  Secret Woods logos.  Bill showed the board a mock-up of the site, which was approved unanimously.  Bill expects it to be "live" within a few days.  The neighborhood will use an organization called cafepress.com which does on demand manufacturing.  There will be no cost to the neighborhood.

It was noted that someone has taken the flag poll floodlight at the front entrance to the neighborhood.  Bill agreed to buy a new bulb for the fixture.

The next meeting, was scheduled for November 8, 2004 The meeting was then adjourned at 7:25 p.m.
